According to a cancer registration report published by the Department of Health in 2020, oral cancer is one of the top 10 cancers among males in Taiwan, with the fastest increase in the number of cancer cases and deaths. Every year, there are about 8000 cases of oral cancer and more than 3300 deaths from the disease and is the most common cancer among young and middle-aged men (25 to 44 years old).

According to medical research, betel nut chewing causes leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis and other symptoms, which are likely to lead to oral cancer. More than 80% of Taiwans oral cancer patients have the habit of chewing betel nut, and the most common sites are the buccal mucosa and tongue. In addition to betel nut, tobacco and alcohol are also closely related to oral cancer. Those who chew betel nut, smoke and drink alcohol at the same time have a 123 times higher risk of developing oral cancer than those who do not.
